Apple to succeed Bertrand Serlet

("Apple Names Federighi Senior VP Of Software Engineering," at 1328 GMT, misstated Craig Federighi's title in the headline and first paragraph. The correct version follows:)

Apple Inc. (AAPL) named Craig Federighi vice president of Mac software engineering to succeed Bertrand Serlet, who is leaving the company.

Federighi is now responsible for development of the Mac OS X operating system and reports to Chief Executive Steve Jobs. He rejoined Apple in 2009 after spending a decade at Ariba Inc. (ARBA), where he held several roles, including chief technology officer.

Serlet, who was senior vice president of Mac software engineering, joined Apple in 1997. Apple representatives weren't immediately available to provide further information.

Shares were down 1% at $339.25 premarket. As of Tuesday's $341.20 close, the stock had risen 49% the past year.
